O Music Awards

MTV — the network that has defined the music industry for 30 years — teamed up with digital partner JESS3 to give a voice to the people with the inaugural O Music Awards. In celebration of the new ways we all experience and consume music, the awards show was designed to be Open, Ongoing and Online — pressing pause twice a year to recognize and reward fans, artists and technologists.

This first show — on April 28 — gives fans complete control in choosing the best in the world of digital music. To get there, first nominations were solicited from the fans in 20 categories. Then: Those who received the most nominations were added to the awards race. Finally: Winners were determined by online and SMS votes, plus Tweets and Facebook likes, in an ongoing fashion, with announcements of the winners rolling in during the week and hours leading up to the live show. As a reward for participating, voters earned special badges and points, tracked in their own Super Fan dashboard.

The JESS3-designed site empowered viewers with live chat, real-time information in a right-pane view and three different camera views for the award show itself: the live show streaming from Freemont Street in Las Vegas, the audience reel or Chiddy Cam, which chronicled Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege’s battle to beat the Guinness World Records title for “Longest Freestyle Rap.”

JESS3 was proud to assist with the strategy and production of this incredible feat. We love the Internet more than life itself, and we’re extremely excited that MTV “gets it,” chose to work with us and stepped up to the plate to create the O Music Awards community.
