500 Startups

Geeks on a Plane Zine

The Project: In celebration of the 2012 Geeks on a Plane Tour of Latin America — where Silicon Valley “geeks” travel abroad to meet with and learn from fellow entrepreneurs and startups — JESS3 created an eclectic zine to delight and entertain attendees.

Our Methodology: As a visual storytelling agency, these are the kinds of projects we live for and were grateful for the opportunity to explore multiple styles and visual environments with the 500 Startups team. We wanted everyone joining the 500 Startups tour to receive a commemorative takeaway. Our zine was just that. It included illustrations, games and useful travel information, featuring as a the hero Dave McClure, founder of 500 Startups. Additionally, JESS3 designed the tour’s logo and branding, as well as created stickers, T-shirts and buttons for the event.

The Results: Working closely with our CEO and Founder Jesse Thomas, the JESS3 design team created a 60-plus page zine that is both nostalgic and entertaining. One part resource and four parts fun, the zine was used by attendees to learn key phrases and the lay of the land, while also enjoying the whimsy of the art and comics.

JESS3 and Blackboard Collaborate on Visualizing the Active Learner

As a part of our ongoing commitment to create content as a public service, we had the opportunity to partner with Blackboard to visualize the "Active Learner" in the context of the state of education experience. As Blackboard notes on their blog: "Digital natives become the majority in classrooms and lecture halls, we are at critical turning point in education. What’s that light around the corner? A world where everyone in education can access infinite teaching tools, information, and analytics from anywhere at any time. A world where all kinds of education activities, from discussions to lectures to collaboration, can be done virtually."

JESS3 Live Sketches LeWeb '11

As an official production partner at this year’s highly anticipated LeWeb ’11 Conference, JESS3 attended the conference to contribute what its best known for: beautiful data visualizations. The catch? The infographics would be created in real-time. With the help of data partners Radian6, the JESS3 team created an infographic for each day of the conference using the topics discussed by the panelists in attendance as well as the topics most widely discussed in the social media.

The Next Web Gets Geosocial Universe 3.0 Exclusive

JESS3’s third version of the Geosocial Universe premiered in an exclusive on The Next Web, one of the world’s largest online tech publishers. The Geosocial Universe 3.0 illustrates the vastness of geosocial networking, highlighting the major social networks as planets orbitting the "sun" of nearly 6 billion global mobile devices — “depicting exactly where mobile stands in today’s ecosystem.” The Next Web noted how the Geosocial Universe 3.0 sheds light on growing mobile traffic, showing “just how big those numbers have become” in the ever-expanding geosocial-sphere.

Samsung Smart Wall Featured by Fast Company

If you are the company you keep, then being mentioned along side Nike, GE and Chevy means you are doing something right. JESS3 could not be more proud to have helped contribute to this year's big win for Samsung at SXSW as the lead agency behind the design, development and curation of their #smartwall. We also loved that the Fast Company reporter Greg Fernestein clued in on Samsung and these brands as ones who have opted "for hands-on experiences and utility at SXSW" -- the new model of marketing that aims to empower, aid and co-create with consumers.

The History of SXSW

Partnering again with Eloqua, JESS3 has assembled some of the most interesting facts about the Austin-based festival since it came into existence some 25 years ago. The History of SXSW infographic also maps out the immense growth in attendance over the past few years of the music, film, and most recently, the interactive portions of South by South West.

From the Campaign Trail with Google: Operation South Carolina

After being on the ground for the initial primaries, our JESS3 team ran the Google Politics and Elections War Room for South Carolina from Google’s DC office. We've been helping visualize Google search data for the 2012 Elections, and the data for this primary shows a new story: Newtmentum.
